Confluyo yo is an improvisational piece of AI co-creative music that explores the structural relationships between sounds conceived from human intention and those that arise serendipitously, both as byproducts of anthropogenic activities and as independent entities in our acoustic ecosystem. In confluyo yo, a performer interacts with a generative sound model via nine-second themes called ‘seeds’, which are transformed from the range of sounds possible by the performer’s instrument into the generative continuum between three contrasting sound distributions (Central American bird calls, industrial machines, and musical instruments). A human operator steers the generative model to mediate the conversation between the performer and the generated sonic material, fostering an evolving dialogue between the performer and the co-creative AI, which results in a live dynamic texture for the performer's improvisation. Drawing from the aesthetics of sonic ecology, the piece emphasizes the complex interconnections between the intentional, incidental, and natural sounds in our acoustic ecosystem.
